Bujera Fort, Udaipur
Bujera Fort is absolutely delightful and is Udaipur’s only boutique hotel situated on the outskirts of the city at Bujera Village, with distant views of Lake Pichola and the city – yet only 20 minutes from Udaipur City Palace. It affords the benefit of being situated in the quieter countryside location whilst also being within easy access of all that Udaipur has to offer.
Stylish, sumptuous, and very welcoming, Bujera Fort is a unique newly built, small fortress, constructed in traditional style around a large quadrangle – and the hand carved stone pillars, and salvaged doors and windows give it a centuries old feel. Surrounding the central, heated pool are lawned, flower filled gardens – with secluded spots to just relax with a good book or enjoy a refreshing pot of tea with homemade cake on your return from sightseeing in the city.
Its UK owners and interior designers Richard Hanlon and Trish McFarlane have created the style and feel of a lovely English country house with beautiful Indian antiques, wonderful handloom dhurrie carpets, and stunning fabric, furnishings and home accessories. It is really beautiful.
There are just 2 lovely Master Suites with spacious marble bathrooms and large working fireplaces; the 3 charming cottage Suites have a separate, shared small private garden and plunge pool, and the 5, more intimate, ensuite Cloister rooms with private sit outs open on to the long verandah by the central garden. The attention to detail is everywhere – pillows from the White Company, lovely bedlinen, block printed dressing gowns, comfortable armchairs – and hot water bottles to warm your bed on cooler nights! Bujera Fort also boasts a lovely library, sumptuous drawing room and an indoor breakfast room for cooler mornings.
The excellent food is home cooked and delicious – the organic fresh produce is grown on their own farm nearby. Pre-dinner drinks and homemade canapes are served on the roof terrace or by the fire under the stars each evening, and all meals are served on the lovely dining verandah – with your own table – and brightly upholstered rattan chairs to add to the homely feel. The friendly staff and excellent service manage to be attentive yet unobtrusive at the same time.
In addition to the sights of Udaipur, and if you can tear yourself away from relaxing in the gardens by the lovely pool, you can take a stroll down the hill to explore the local village or browse the gorgeous array of items for sale in the shop – irresistible.
For a more personalised, homely, boutique stay in style and comfort with excellent food and attentive service, Bujera Fort is perfect – and a complete change to the larger resorts.
